		<description>I think that the one intellectual area requiring the greatest improvement among officers in the U.S. military is original, &lt;i&gt;independent&lt;/i&gt; thought.

The best way to ascertain a person&#039;s understanding of a subject is to ask them to explain that subject in their own words. Be very wary of those who cannot.

Again, and again, and again, I try to discuss subjects with people who do not look to the &lt;em&gt;why&lt;/em&gt; of doctrine or theory. If a person cannot answer &lt;em&gt;why&lt;/em&gt; and defend the foundation of their argument in reason, then they don&#039;t really understand the ideas they champion. There is one hell of an Emperor&#039;s New Clothes problem out there. Knowledge of a thing is often not enough; go for &lt;i&gt;understanding&lt;/i&gt;.</description>
