Red Teaming Myth #1

To help promote the practice of sound red teaming, we’re launching a new series: red teaming myths. The first myth we’d like to identify and address is “Red teams predict the future.” While most customers would indeed like the red team to predict the future (and do so accurately), it’s simply beyond the practical mandate of all natural (as opposed to supernatural) red teams.
Instead, red teams raise possibilities and weigh these possibilities within the context of uncertainty and risk. As necessary, good red teams teach this to their customers. If a red team tries to sell you on their ability to predict the future, find another red team. Alternatively, if your customer insists that you must predict the future, find another customer.
